Now Hiring - Project C.A.R.E. Family Consultant

The Western Piedmont Council of Governments (WPCOG) is currently seeking energetic, self-motivated, and detail oriented candidates for the position of Project C.A.R.E. Family Consultant within the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) work group. Project C.A.R.E. ("Caregiver Alternatives to Running on Empty") is a state funded dementia-specific support program for family caregivers.​


The WPCOG is an innovative and forward-thinking organization dedicated to addressing aging issues for the region. Situated in the beautiful rolling hills and mountains of western North Carolina, with ample opportunities for recreation, shopping and dining abounding in the region, makes the area an ideal place to call home. The region contains great natural resources from the slopes of Grandfather Mountain to five major lakes along the Catawba River.


The Project C.A.R.E. Family Consultant provides support, education, care consultation and referral for support services to families struggling with the demands of caregiving for persons with Alzheimer’s or related dementias. The ideal candidate must be knowledgeable of the impact of Alzheimer’s and related dementias on family caregivers; have a working knowledge of community-based services for older adults; speak publicly to educate the public about the disease and the ability to work with individual caregivers to sustain their loved-ones at home for as long as possible. The ideal candidate will be a motivated self-starter, who can learn new skills quickly, work independently, possess excellent communication skills, be well organized, detail-oriented, and be able to use Microsoft computer applications effectively. The Family Consultant position will be based in Hickory and will cover an 11 county area of the western piedmont and high country regions. The position will require daily travel and use of a personal vehicle. Mileage reimbursement is provided.


A degree is required in gerontology, social work, sociology, counseling, or other closely related field and demonstrated expert-level knowledge of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. A minimum of 2-3 years of experience in aging, social work, counseling, or long-term care field is desired. An equivalent combination of education, experience and training may be considered.


The starting salary is $36,585 to $44,574 dependent on qualifications, and a full benefits package is provided. The WPCOG participates in the N.C. Local Government Retirement System.
